The 100 Greatest People of Comedy

The 100 greatest contributors to the art and business of comedy in the modern age. (post-Lenny Bruce circa 1965)  Contributions can come in the form of standup, sketch, or film and television performance, writing, and/or production.

  1.  Richard Pryor  (1940-2005)  Contributions to the form:  Groundbreaking standup with classic sets like Live in Concert, Live on the Sunset Strip, and Live and Smokin.  Co-wrote Blazing Saddles.  Harry Monroe in Stir Crazy and Monty Brewster in Brewster’s Millions.
  2.  Mel Brooks (born 1926)  Contributions to the form: Wrote, directed and starred in Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part I, Silent Movie, and Spaceballs.  Wrote and directed The Producers and Young Frankenstein film and theatre projects.  Three-time Emmy nominee for writing on Caesar’s Hour.
  3.  Larry David (born 1947)  Contributions:  Creator of the legendary sitcom Seinfeld, for which he served as executive producer and head writer from 1989-1996. Creater, writer and star of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
  4.  John Cleese (born 1939)  Contributions:  Co-founder and central player in Monty Python comedy troupe, along which he starred in Monty Python’s Flying Circus sketch comedy show from 1969-1974.  Monty Python would go on to create comedy film classics like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life.  Co-wrote and starred in British sitcom Faulty Towers.  Wrote and starred in A Fish Called Wanda.
  5.  Lorne Michaels (born 1944) Contributions: Creator and producer of Saturday Night Live.  Executive producer of Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.  Executive producer of The Kids in the Hall, 30 Rock, Portlandia, and Documentary Now!  Produced the films Mean Girls, Tommy Boy, The Three Amigos!, Wayne’s World, and Coneheads.
  6.  Will Ferrell (born 1967) Contributions: Legendary stint on Saturday Night Live from 1995-2002, with classic characters like Alex Trebek, George W. Bush, James Lipton, Harry Carry, Robert Goulet and cow-bellist Gene Freckle.  Co-writer and star of Anchorman, Step Brothers, and Talladega Nights.  Frank the Tank in Old School, Jacobim Mugatu in Zoolander, and Buddy Hobbs in Elf.  Founder of the website Funny or Die.
  7.  Eddie Murphy (born 1961)  Contributions:  Cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1980-1984 with classic characters like Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson, Gumby, Stevie Wonder, John David Stutts, Tyrone Green, and James Brown.  Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise.   9.  Norman Lear (born 1922) Contributions: Produced classic 70’s sitcoms All in the Family, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Good Times, and Maude.
  10.  Carl Reiner (born 1922) Contributions:  Co-wrote and acted on Caesar’s Hour and Your Show of Shows.  Created, wrote and acted on The Dick Van Dyke Show.  Directed The Jerk.  Performed The 2000 Year Man act as a duo with Mel Brooks, leading to the release of five comedy albums.
  11.  Carol Burnett  (born 1933) Contributions: Star of The Carol Burnette Show that ran from 1967-1978.  Starred in The Garry Moore Show from 1959-1962.
  12.  Robin Williams (1951-2014) Contributions: Daniel Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire, The Genie in Aladdin, and Armand Goldman in The Birdcage.  Numerous stand up classics including  A Night at the Met, An Evening With Robin Williams and Live on Broadway. Mork in the sitcom Mork & Mindy. Regular guest on Carson and Letterman.
  13.  George Carlin (1937-2008) Contributions: Prolific and hugely influential standup comic with over twenty comedy albums to his credit including Class Clown, Carlin on Campus, FM & AM, Carlin at Carnegie and You Are All Diseased.  Frequent performer and guest host on The Tonight Show.  Wrote five books including Brain Droppings and Napalm and Silly Putty.
  14.  Bill Murray (born 1950) Contributions: Cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1976-1980. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters, Carl Spackler in Caddyshack, Ernie McCracken in Kingpin, Herman Blume in Rushmore, Phil Connors in Groundhog Day, John in Stripes, and Tripper Harrison in Meatballs.
  15.  Lenny Bruce (1925-1966) Contributions:  Groundbreaking stand up comedian who pushed the boundaries of what one can joke about in public.  Of the sets that weren’t shut down on obscenity charges, The Carnegie Hall Concert is one of his best remembered.

  19.  Tina Fey (born 1970)  Contributions:  Cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1997-2006, for which she would ascend to head writer and helm the Weekend Update chair.  Creator and star of hit NBC comedy 30 Rock. Writer of high school classic Mean Girls.  Creator of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.   20.  Chris Rock (born 1965)  Contributions:  Standup classics including Bring The Pain and Bigger and Blacker.  Cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990-1993.  Wrote, directed and starred in the films I Think I Love My Wife and Top Five.   25.  Bill Cosby (born 1937) Contributions:  Numerous classic comedy albums including To Russell My Brother Who I Slept With, Himself and Why Is There Air?  Produced and starred in NBC sitcom The Cosby Show from 1984-1992.  Created, hosted, and voiced Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids from 1972-1985.

  30.  Norm MacDonald (1959-2021) Contributions:  Weekend Update host and cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1993-1998.  Created and starried in ABC sitcom Norm from 1999-2001.  Legendary appearances as a late night guest and Comedy Central roaster.
  31.  Harold Ramis  (1944-2014) Contributions: Wrote and directed Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, and Analyze This.  Wrote the screenplays for Ghostbusters, Animal HouseStripes and Meatballs.  Original head writer of SCTV.
