The 100 Greatest Modern Actors

Marlin Brando once said “To grasp the full significance of life is the actor’s duty, to interpret it is his problem, and to express it his dedication.”  Just a short generation later, Jim Carrey would observe “Until Ace Ventura, no actor had considered talking through his ass.”  Yes, there is no recipe for what makes great acting and no surefire way to distinguish it from the talking asses of the world, perhaps in no small part because when it’s at it’s best, it doesn’t seem like acting at all.  Ranking artistry is never easy, if not downright impossible.  It’s undeniably subjective, contentious, and almost sure to offend.  Of course, that’s never stopped us before.

Rankings were made taking into account overall ability and range, strength of the roles taken, longevity, influence, and awards won.  Listed alongside are each actor’s best works, also loosely ranked according to how each exemplifies their talents.
Actors must have appeared in at least one 21st century feature film for consideration as “modern.”

  1. This list is pathetic. Doesn’t make any sense that a list of the greatest actors of our time should include only those from the US and the U.K. Get real folks. You either don’t watch enough cinema or have very low standards. Denzel Washington, Al Pacino and Nicole Kidman….excuse me. All highly overrated performers. Do you watch cinema from Mainland Europe, Asia, South America, Australia and Africa ? Give it a try and then revise your list.

    • lol, yea I don’t think you’re going to win too many allies going at the careers of Denzel and Pacino. Try again. Also, Nicole Kidman isn’t even on this list, so..you are excused.
Otherwise, please enlighten us with your all your worldly suggestions–we’re all ears…

    • The greatest actors from around the world all make their way to Hollywood at some point- the ones who speak English obviously. American cinema is considered to be the gold standard across the globe- no other country can claim that. Not to say there aren’t great actors outside the US, UK or Australia- they just won’t get the credit unless they speak English considering it’s the closest to a universal language. It is sad that in the US it seems everyone has a chance unless they’re Asian. The fact that there are no major Asian or Indian actors- that speak perfect English- in the US is very strange & shameful.

    • It’s implied that this would only apply to actors who regularly work in Hollywood. Just as if one were to look at a similar list from Asia, Eastern/Central Europe, Africa or S.America it wouldn’t include a single one of these actors.
That’s just how these things work. It’s not a conspiracy or meant as disrespect. Not worth getting annoyed by.

  2. One of the greatest actors of our time is John McAvoy who totally transformed himself in Split and The Last King of Scotland.

  3. I actually think this is a decent list despite the backlash you’re getting. People just like to get on their high horse, it’s boring frankly, go make your own list if you’re so offended. A few things I would say: Seems odd there’s no Brando, considering you have Newman on there who is only one year his junior and he is kind of the father of modern acting. The most jarring placement for me is Tom Hardy, he’s definitely talented but he’s too high. For me, there’s no way Norton, Walken or Keitel should be beneath him, they all have more powerful performances and a larger body of work. There’s a few other things I’d move around as well but overall, a good effort.
